San José, Costa Rica, June 26, 2020
President of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, Judge Elizabeth Odio Benito, has today received the Prominent Women in International Law Award, granted by the American Society of International Law, an association with over 4,000 members in 100 different countries.
“This recognition allows me to renew my strength to continue working for the pursuit of justice with an adequate gender perspective. We have come a long way, but there is still much to be done for the effective observance of human rights for all. This pandemic has exposed the enormous inequalities and injustices that exist, and we have to continue working so that all people are truly free and equal”, said the President of the Inter-American Court upon receiving the award.
The prize is awarded by the Women in International Law Interest Group (WILIG), which was created to promote and advance the careers of women in the field of international law.
The Prominent Women in International Law Award honors those who have advanced international women's law, gender and women's rights. Since 1993, the Women in International Law Interest Group of the American Society of International Law has selected individuals who have ‘employed international law to advance women's rights, broken the glass ceiling for women in international law and promoted women's voices in the field of international law’.
