Inter-American Court inaugurated its third edition of the Course on the Rights of Indigenous and Tribal Peoples, Environmental Rights and Human Rights Defenders, in El Salvador

 

San José, Costa Rica, October 26, 2021.- . On October 25, the Inter-American Court inaugurated its third edition of the Specialized Training Course on “Rights of Indigenous and Tribal Peoples, Environmental Rights and Human Rights Defenders”, in El Salvador. The event was attended by the President of the Court, Judge Elizabeth Odio Benito, who through virtual media highlighted the importance of implementing jurisprudential standards on the rights of indigenous and tribal peoples through review of compliance with the Convention on Human Rights. Councilor Dr. Luis Alonso Ramírez Menéndez also shared a few words with the participants on behalf of the National Council of the Judiciary (Consejo Nacional de la Judicatura or CNJ).

The Course will be held from October 25 to 30 through the videoconferencing platform of the “Dr. Arturo Zeledón Castrillo” Judicial Training Academy of El Salvador, with the participation of some 30 people from the field of justice administration, including judges, prosecutors, officers of the Attorney General's Office, as well as other key institutions for the protection of human rights in the country.

This training program is a part of the activities under the “Strengthening the Protection of Human Rights and the Rule of Law through jurisprudential dialogue, optimization of capacities and compliance with judgments of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights in El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras” project. It is implemented by the Inter-American Court with the support of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (COSUDE), the “Dr. Arturo Zeledón Castrillo” Judicial Training Academy of El Salvador and the National Council of the Judiciary. The course is led by Dr. Juana María Ibáñez Rivas and Dr. Raquel Yrigoyen Fajardo.
