San José, Costa Rica, March 27, 2023. The Inter-American Court of Human Rights, with the support of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), and the Royal Swedish Embassy in Guatemala, has made the English translations of 48 Judgments and 3 Advisory Opinions available to the public through its website. The translations were completed between January and December 2022.
Thanks to the project "Institutional Strengthening of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights for the optimization of capacities, Phase II", a fundamental contribution has been made to the dissemination of the Inter-American Court’s case law in the English language. In 2022 alone, thanks to the Swedish Cooperation, the Inter-American Court was able to translate a total of 51 of the Court’s key documents.
It is worth noting the importance of translating the Inter-American Court’ decisions into English. Firstly, there are English-speaking States parties to the American Convention. Secondly, there are other American States, including several from the Caribbean, that have not yet ratified the American Convention, with the language barrier being one of the main obstacles to their learning about the Court’s work. In addition, translation into English is essential for the harmonious development of international human rights law and for strengthening the increasingly fluid and constant case law dialogue with the European and African Courts of Human Rights, the United Nations’ human rights bodies, academia, research centers in International Law, among many other key international actors.
