I/A Court HR declares that the American Convention continues to be in effect in Venezuela and it has jurisdiction to continue hearing the case of Chirinos Salamanca et. Al. V. Venezuela

 

San José, Costa Rica, August 26, 2025. The Inter-American Court of Human Rights (I/A Court HR) issued a judgment on the preliminary objections in the case of Chirinos Salamanca et al. v. Venezuela on August 21, 2025. The Court unanimously rejected the preliminary objections filed by the State in its response to petition, regarding the alleged lack of jurisdiction ratione voluntatis and ratione temporis, and the control over lawfulness of the actions of the Inter-American Commission. Consequently, the Court will continue hearing the case in the merits stage and subsequent reparations and costs.

  • Corte IDH inaugura exposición sobre la Convención Americana de Derechos Humanos interpretada e ilustrada por y para niños, niñas y adolescentes en el museo de los niños

    San José, Costa Rica, 4 de septiembre de 2025. La Corte Interamericana de Derechos Humanos, en conjunto con el Museo de los Niños en Costa Rica, inauguró hoy en la Galería Nacional una exposición dedicada a la Convención Americana sobre Derechos Humanos, interpretada e ilustrada por y para niños, niñas y adolescentes de América Latina y el Caribe, realizada en conjunto con la Comisión Nacional para el Mejoramiento de la Administración de Justicia (Conamaj) y la Fundación Paniamor a inicios de este año. La muestra estará abierta al público durante un mes y busca acercar el lenguaje de los derechos humanos a las nuevas generaciones a través del arte.

On August 8, the IV Edition of the “Latin American Human Rights Seedbed: Bringing the youth close to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights” (LATAM Seedbed), a regional initiative along with the Human Rights Center of the Law Faculty of University of Buenos Aires, the Rule of Law for Latin America Program of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and the Training Center of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, came to a close.

On August 12, the award ceremony was held for the winners of the photography contest “Focusing on Rights: a photographic journey along with the I/A Court HR.” The act was led by Judge Nancy Hernández López, President of the Court. The awards ceremony was held at the facilities of the Colegio de Abogados y Abogadas de Costa Rica (Bar Association of Costa Rica).

  • The Inter-American Court of Human Rights recognizes the existence of a stand-alone human right to care

    San José, Costa Rica, August 7, 2025. The Inter-American Court of Human Rights notified today Advisory Opinion 31 of 2025 on the content and scope of care as a human right and its interrelationship with other rights, adopted on June 12, 2025, in response to a request submitted by the Republic of Argentina in January of 2023. This advisory process had the second highest participation in the Court’s history, with a total of 129 observations received, and it was the first in which an international court was asked to address the right to care.

  • Chile complied with the judgment in the Case of Teachers of Chañaral and other Municipalities

    San José, Costa Rica, July 10, 2025. In conformity with that set forth in the Order on Monitoring Compliance with Judgment issued by the Court on July 1, 2025, the Republic of Chile has complied with the execution of all the reparations ordered in the Judgment of November 10, 2021. Therefore, the Inter-American Court decided to conclude and archive the case. For more information, the Judgment of November 10, 2021, can be accessed here and the Order of July 1, 2025, which declares the closing of the case, can be accessed here.
