Opening Ceremony of the Inter-American Judicial Year 2021: “Human rights at the center of recovery”


On Friday, March 19, 2021, the 2021 Inter-American Judicial Year was inaugurated with the participation of the President of the Inter-American Court, Judge Elizabeth Odio Benito, the Vice President Judge Patricio Pazmiño Freire, and the Court’s Judges. The keynote lecture was given by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet Jeria, who spoke on “The global challenges for human rights in a post-pandemic world.”

JUDGMENT

Peru is not responsible in the case of the dismissal of a Judge by means of a disciplinary proceeding

In the Judgment in the Case of Cordero Bernal v. Peru, recently notified, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights declared that the State of Peru was not responsible for violating the judicial guarantees (Article 8), the principle of legality (Article 9), the political rights (Article 23), and the right to judicial protection (Article 25) contained in the American Convention on Human Rights of Héctor Fidel Cordero Bernal.

The Inter-American Court concludes Conference on Gender Parity in National and International Justice


The Conference on “Challenges for gender parity in justice: mechanisms and opportunities for overcoming obstacles to the professional advancement of women in the judiciary” organized by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights in collaboration with the Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM) took place from March 8 to 10, 2021. The Conference was organized to celebrate International Women’s Day, which is held on March 8 each year.

TRAINING FOR JOURNALISTS

Start of the Diploma in Human Rights for Journalists – Second Edition 2021

The Inter-American Court of Human Rights (I/A Court H.R.), with the support of the Inter-American Institute of Human Rights, the UNESCO Regional Information and Communications Office, and the Rule of Law Program for Latin America of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, inaugurated the Second Edition of the Diploma in Human Rights for Journalists, 2021. More than 3,000 candidates responded to the invitation to enroll in the second edition of the Diploma and, of these, 80 journalists from different parts of Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe and the United States of America were selected.

As part of the permanent communication and training efforts of the Inter-American Court to ensure that an increasing number of people are made aware of how the Inter-American System of Human Rights operates, the Court has made available to all those who are interested the Initial Virtual Training Cycle on Human Rights.

The Inter-American Court closed, in Guatemala, the second course on its Case Law concerning indigenous peoples, environmental rights and the rights of human rights defenders

On March 5, 2021, the Inter-American Court closed the second specific training course in Guatemala on “Rights of indigenous peoples, environmental rights, and rights of human rights defenders in the case law of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.” The course was held from March 1 to 5 using the virtual platform of the Institute of Constitutional Justice (IJC), with the participation of more than 180 officials of the Judiciary, the Constitutional Court, the Public Prosecution Service, the Public Criminal Defense Service and the Ombudsman’s Office, among other key institutions for the protection of human rights in that country.

The Inter-American Court closed, in El Salvador, the second course on its Case Law concerning Indigenous Peoples, Environmental Rights and the Rights of Human Rights Defenders

On March 19, 2021, the Inter-American Court closed the second course for specific training in El Salvador on “Rights of indigenous peoples, environmental rights, and rights of human rights defenders in the case law of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.” The course was held from March 15 to 19 using the virtual platform of the “Dr. Arturo Zeledón Castrillo” Judicial Training Academy of El Salvador, with the participation of more than 40 officials employed in the administration of justice (including judges, prosecutors and public defenders) and also in key institutions for the protection of human rights in that country.

The Inter-American Court closed the second specific course in Guatemala on Impunity and Gross Human Rights Violations

On March 25, 2021, the Inter-American Court closed the second specific training course in Guatemala on “Impunity and Gross Human Rights Violations.” The Course was held from March 22 to 25 using the virtual platform of the Institute of Constitutional Justice (IJC), with the participation of more than 220 officials employed in the administration of justice (including judges, prosecutors and criminal public defenders) and also in key institutions for the protection of human rights in that country.
